A section of leaders drawn from the Mt. Kenya region is planning to unite the entire region. The move comes days after notable leaders from Mount Kenya skipped DP Ruto’s PG meeting held in Karen.
During an interview with Inooro TV, Ruto dismissed any suggestions of entering into a coalition with other parties.
“Our coalition (UDA) is for all. So we don’t need any alliance, we don’t need any coalition because our organization is already a coalition for all the people of Kenya,” Deputy President Ruto said
Mwangi Kiunjuri
Former Agriculture cabinet secretary and the Service party leader Mwangi Kiunjuri has hatched a plan to unite the vote-rich region.
Kiunjuri said he would call for a meeting that will bring together all party leaders in Mt. Kenya, he added that the meeting will adopt a common goal and solidify Mt. Kenya votes.
In remarks that seemed to target Ruto, the former CS warned politicians who take advantage of the continuing disunity in the Mount Kenya region to try to get the region’s vote without involving the leaders.
“Our unity as Mt. Kenya, nobody should take it for granted. No one should think that you can split us to their advantage. As leaders we will sit down and craft a package,” Kiunjuri said.
Governor Nderitu Muriithi
Laikipia Governor Nderitu Muriithi also reiterated the same message—he warned politicians against inciting Mt. Kenya residents to fight each other.
“You want to bring prosperity to Mt. Kenya, you cannot do so by setting us to attack one another, so, as a political community, leaders, and clergy, as we look at the next year’s election, is my prayer that we build a Kenya that works for everybody,” he said.
Governor Kiraitu Murungi
Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has been at the forefront pushing for Mt. Kenya Unity. Kiraitu stated that the region needs its own candidate to compete with those who have shown interest.
“I agree with those who say we should have a political party in Mt. Kenya. If you are walking on foot, what would be doing in a horse race? We should have our own horse,” Murungi told the Standard newspaper.
The Mt. Kenya region has over seven million registered voters. Presidential candidates in the next general elections have been touring the region with the hope that they would sway voters to support them.
IEBC, in a gazette notice, has announced that the elections will be held next year on August 9, 2022.
