Gachagua News Today: Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has addressed unnamed individuals who are allegedly advocating for his removal from office, asserting his strong position within President William Ruto’s administration.
While speaking to the residents of Sagana in Kirinyaga County on Saturday, Gachagua cautioned the leaders behind these rumors, urging them to desist from making divisive statements that could harm national unity.
Dismissing the rumors as “nonsense,” Gachagua emphasized that such discussions should remain confined to WhatsApp groups and not be aired in public forums.
“This government belongs to the people of Mt. Kenya. We made significant contributions to this administration. I’ve heard some people suggest that we should leave the government, but how can we abandon our own government? I urge leaders to avoid making statements that confuse Kenyans,” Gachagua stated.
“That kind of nonsense belongs in WhatsApp groups. When addressing rural areas, let’s use language that unites us. Can we abandon the person we voted for? We are fully committed to this government,” he added.
The Deputy President made these remarks while accompanying President Ruto on a three-day tour of the Mt. Kenya region, which started in Embu on Wednesday, continued in Murang’a on Friday, and concluded in Kirinyaga on Saturday.
This visit comes amidst rumors of a plot to impeach Gachagua, with some critics suggesting that the President may be gauging his deputy’s support within the region.
Reports have surfaced indicating that a series of late-night meetings were held last month involving 21 Mt. Kenya politicians, who allegedly agreed to initiate an impeachment motion against Gachagua, accusing him of undermining the presidency.

Addressing these rumors, Gachagua acknowledged that he has faced criticism for his efforts to unite the Mt. Kenya region.
“I haven’t seen the impeachment motion, but I’ve heard rumors that it’s being pursued due to my efforts to secure government positions for our people and address issues affecting avocado farmers,” Gachagua stated during a media briefing at his residence on August 4, 2024.

The Deputy President has also faced criticism from politicians close to the President, who have accused him of promoting tribal-based politics instead of fostering national unity.
“If we truly believe in the offices we hold, which require us to be symbols of national unity, then we should focus on uniting all Kenyans, not just the people of Mt. Kenya,” National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah remarked during an event in Laikipia on June 9, 2024.
In response, Gachagua has accused these leaders of misrepresenting his statements to serve their own agendas.
“I am on record as a strong advocate for peace. The unity we are calling for is inclusive, and it’s about the unity of Kenya as a whole. We are pursuing this unity from the grassroots up,” the Deputy President said during an event in Naivasha on June 9, 2024.
