Mama Rachel Ruto is the current first lady of the Republic of Kenya. She is a born-again Christian who met the love of her life while on evangelistic duty. How Mama Rachel Ruto met President William Ruto
The story of Rachel Ruto’s love life dates back to three decades ago when she met the fifth President of Kenya, Dr. William Ruto.
During a past interview, President Ruto disclosed that his relationship with Rachel Ruto started way back when they were both students at the University of Nairobi. At the time, Ruto was studying BSc Botany and Zoology while Rachel was taking Education at Kenya University.
President Ruto narrated that their relationship went from strength to strength. Ruto gave thanks to an evangelical team that introduced him to his wife. He says that they were both part of the North Rift Evangelistic Team, and that’s how they started to know each other.

“She (Rachel) was a member of the choir like me. We were both part of an evangelistic team called the North Rift Evangelistic Team. We used to go on missions together… During teaching practice, she was posted to Kessup Girls and I was generally around, “said President Ruto.

Rachel Ruto has never been shy about expressing her love for President Ruto. On President Ruto’s 54th birthday, the first lady penned a lovely message to her husband.
“It fills me with great joy to celebrate another year of life with you. Today we celebrate your birthday and our wedding anniversary. You are passionate, loving, kind, and have been a great father to our children,” Mama Rachel Ruto wrote on his social media accounts.
She added that she is grateful for the adventure she has so far had with the President.
“Doing life with you has been the greatest adventure of my life and I’m eternally grateful to have you in my life. Happy birthday, Bill,” she added.
Mama Rachel Ruto’s initiatives and empowerment programs
Over the years, Her Excellency Rachel Ruto has devoted her life to empowering women, especially those from rural areas. The first lady is the founder and patron of the Mama Organization.
Her Excellency Rachel Ruto is a thought leader on financial inclusion and women’s economic empowerment. She is the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, Founder and Patron of the Mama Organization.
Through her leadership, she has become a role model for women and a champion for Faith Diplomacy, Food Systems Innovation, Nutrition, Mental Health and Wellness, Inclusivity, Climate Change, and Entrepreneurship.

Her Excellency founded the Joyful Women’s Organization, the first program of Mama in 2009. It has grown to 110,000 women in 6,000 groups spanning 41 counties in Kenya, revolving over $20 million.
The initiative has now scaled up into the Mama Organization, organically responding to the challenges of women through Mama Feeding, Mama Fresh, Mama Cycling, Carakana, which empowers women through creativity, and Rear Guard, which espouses values of leadership, mentoring, and coaching through faith.

Rachel Ruto, together with her husband, President William Ruto, is blessed with six children, namely:
- Nick Ruto
Nick Ruto is the firstborn son of Dr. William Ruto and the first lady, Mama Rachel Ruto. Nick is a graduate of law and was admitted to the bar as an advocate of the High Court in 2018. He is known for his interest in politics and is a good public speaker.
- June Ruto
June recently made news when she married her Nigerian lover. She has a close bond with her father, and she normally refers to herself as “daddy’s” girl. She serves as a diplomat in Poland.
- Charlene Ruto
Despite her education, Charlene runs the family business. She is a director at the Weston Hotel. She heads branding and public relations for the hotel.
- Stephanie Ruto
She is a graduate of Strathmore University. Her friends describe her as a jovial, generous, and bright lady.
- George Ruto
He is the last-born child of Mama Rachel Ruto. He lives a private life and nothing much can be said about George. He’s still studying. His resemblance to his father made Kenyans brand him as the Hustlers’ twin.
- Abby Ruto
During the 2017 general elections, Abby’s name was featured in the news. It was alleged that President Ruto had neglected her, a claim that Ruto dismissed momentarily. Abby is the daughter of President William Ruto and was born out of wedlock.
- Nadia Cherono
She is the adopted daughter of Dr. Ruto’s family. Ruto adopted her when she was abandoned as a newborn. He named her after his mother, Cherono.
How educated is the first lady
Rachel Ruto started her education at Likuyani Primary School in Kakamega County. She later joined Butere Girls High School for her O and A levels. She then proceeded to Kenya University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree.

She also has a master’s degree from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. In 2014, she was awarded the International Honorary Fellowship Award for Women’s Empowerment at Binary University in Malaysia.
