The Public Service Commission of Kenya has uncovered a staggering 20,000 ghost workers lurking on the government payroll, with the State House taking the lead among government agencies implicated in the scandal.

State House, along with the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC) Limited, has been red-flagged for having an excess of over 100 members each, as the commission’s investigation brings to light a pervasive issue of unauthorized personnel.

Additionally, the commission has exposed 15 government agencies exceeding 50 percent of their recommended staff establishment.

The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) stands out with an alarming 115% overstaffing.

The National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority follows suit with an excessive 72% beyond the recommended levels.

The State Department for Devolution boasts an unauthorized workforce surpassing recommendations by 61%.

The State Department for Higher Education and Research is not far behind, with a concerning 69% excess staff.

The State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services rounds up the list with an unauthorized workforce exceeding recommendations by 59%.

These startling revelations expose a systemic issue plaguing various government bodies, undermining accountability and efficient resource management

Ministries bear the brunt of this ghost worker debacle, recording the highest number of unauthorized staff at a staggering 12,535. State corporations follow suit with 4,558, while public universities contribute to the alarming figure with 2,287 unauthorized personnel.
