President Uhuru Kenyatta has once again stamped his authority after moving Deputy President’s allies in the cabinet to less lucrative posts in today’s Cabinet reshuffle.
It’s alleged that Deputy President has been using his allies in the cabinet to sponsor his presidential bid in the 2022 general elections.
On Wednesday, 29, 2021, President Uhuru through a gazette notice demoted Energy Cabinet Secretary to Ministry of Devolution, and Simon Chelugui who enjoyed a huge budget in the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection was met with shock after State Department for Social Protection, Senior Citizens Affairs and Special Programmes was transferred to the Ministry of Public Service and Gender.
The move will now leave CS Simon Chelugui with lesser duties.
However, President Uhuru Kenyatta transferred State Department for ASALs to the Ministry of Public Service and Gender before moving Charles Keter to the Ministry of Devolution. Without ASALs, Keter will now be left to coordinate functions of Devolution only.
Charles Keter who served as the Energy has been in the spotlight for months. The ministry had been marred by rampant corruption that affected the prices of electricity. President Uhuru has ordered the new CS for Energy Monica Juma to reduce the cost of electricity by 33% before December 25th, 2021.
The move to transfer the two cabinet secretaries to less lucrative ministries comes a day after ODM leader Raila Odinga met Mount Kenya tycoons and businessmen who vowed to sponsor his Presidential bid.
The reshuffle confirms the fallout between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, it’s not clear if the two will ever share a table again in the cabinet meeting.
The difference between the two started playing out in the public after President Uhuru shook hands with his arch-rival Raila Odinga.
Deputy President in a series of meetings held at his Karen residence dismissed the handshake claiming that it has destroyed the government agenda.
With Deputy President’s attack on Uhuru’s leadership, it appears President Uhuru Kenyatta has decided to seal his legacy without Ruto’s input.
