Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has sharply criticized Archbishop Anthony Muheria, accusing him of double standards and warning him to avoid meddling in political matters.

Sudi, a close ally of President William Ruto, took issue with Muheria’s recent criticisms of the current administration, which the Archbishop voiced on behalf of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Archbishop Muheria, known for his vocal leadership within the Catholic Church, recently led a group of bishops in condemning the Ruto regime, raising concerns over what he termed as an emerging “culture of lies, over taxation, abductions, killings of women, and human rights violations” within the government.

These pointed remarks have fueled debate, drawing responses from leaders within the ruling coalition.

In his response, Sudi dismissed the Archbishop’s statements as politically biased, suggesting Muheria’s alignment with the previous administration undermines his credibility.

Sudi remarked, “It’s dumbfounding to see Archbishop Anthony Muheria preaching the gospel on one hand and fanning tribalism on the other. Muheria lacks moral authority to criticize the current regime because he is akin to double-speak.”

The Kapseret MP further suggested that Muheria’s remarks were driven by partisan loyalties to past regimes, urging the Archbishop to focus on spiritual matters rather than political debates.

Sudi’s comments reflect an ongoing tension between the Church and the government as religious leaders continue to raise social and ethical concerns about governance in Kenya.

However, with church officials citing their responsibility to speak out against injustice, it is uncertain whether religious leaders will heed calls to refrain from addressing political issues.

This exchange adds to a growing list of public disputes between the government and religious leaders, highlighting the complexity of church-state relations in Kenya’s political landscape.
