Kenyans are not pleased with Cabinet secretary George Magoha’s remarks made during the KUCCPS placement results release at KICD on the 17th of August. Many people have expressed their disappointments through social media telling off the CS after he claimed that anthropology is a useless course.

“ You find a student who wants medicine filling the first slot, the second, the third, and the fourth choice. He or she is actually a fool.

For example, if you know you are medically minded and have not qualified for medicine, why not pursue public health that is closely related with medicine than study anthropology in university for nothing,” Magoha’s sentiment.

Anthropology Association of Kenya through their Twitter handle told the public that, “ Remarks about anthropology by Cabinet Secretary of Education professor Magoha during Kuccps release on 17th August can not go unchallenged. He appears to be completely ignorant about anthropology as a university-level course and its role in contemporary society. ”

Professor Magoha said that the ministry is planning and will remove some courses offered in public universities since they are of no use to society.

“ What professor Magoha doesn’t know is that no other discipline is pivotally positioned to bring and bear the weight of human experience in every sphere of life. The course helps answer the questions how to forge the world to be fit for coming generation to be inhibitors, ” said Sulliat .

“The CS seems not to appreciate some of the local but very important courses in our university. Not until we begin to decolonize our minds on our education system and mindset we will never appreciate and promote some disciplines that harness the power of our local knowledge system and practices,” said Sandra Mwarania.

During his presentations to students placed on courses against their choices, the cabinet secretary used himself as an example saying, “ Being cabinet secretary was never my first choice. I only took the job as a challenge due to the prevailing circumstances that were facing  the ministry at that time.”

However, these remarks were never welcomed by some citizens who felt that the CS has been underperforming in his duties. The majority of them suggested that he must resign if he was not passionate about the job.
