Lawyer Wahome Thuku Criticizes Esther Passaris, Asserts Opposition’s Demands Courage
Lawyer Wahome Thuku has directed sharp criticism at Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris, asserting that participation in the opposition requires resilience and fortitude.
In a Facebook post, Thuku addressed his “Azimio partners” and emphasized that being part of the opposition is not for the faint-hearted, urging them to respond when called to the “other side.”
“I need to say this to my Azimio partners. Opposition is not for the faint-hearted. Ukiitwa ng’ambo ile ingine, itika uende (when you are called to the other side, answer and cross over),” Thuku said in a Facebook post.
Thuku’s remarks come in response to Passaris’s recent expression of support for the controversial 3 percent housing levy.

While Passaris remains a member of the opposition movement Azimio La Umoja, her differing views on key issues have raised questions about her stance within the opposition and the potential for collaboration with the government.
Thuku’s statement implies that Passaris’s position on the housing levy and her call for action against corruption might be at odds with the typical expectations of opposition members.

He suggests that opposition politics require unwavering determination and the willingness to challenge the status quo, even if it means crossing over to the “other side.”
The lawyer’s Facebook post underscores the complexities and internal dynamics within opposition movements, particularly in a political landscape where party loyalty and adherence to ideological positions are highly scrutinized.
The remarks made by Thuku reflect the broader perception that opposition politics demand steadfastness and a staunch commitment to the opposition’s core principles.
They also shed light on the ongoing debates surrounding Passaris’s positions, raising further questions about her future within the opposition movement.
It remains to be seen how Passaris’s support for the housing levy and her call to combat corruption will be received within her party and the broader opposition movement.
