Mount Elgon Leaders Demand More Sub Counties, Seek Development and Representation

Leaders from across Mount Elgon are intensifying their calls for the creation of additional sub-counties, claiming that the region has been long neglected in terms of development and representation.

Former Education Officer and Political leader, Patrick Kosum, emphasized that Kaptama Division, in particular, has been overlooked for an extended period, being the only one without sub-county status.

Kosum highlighted that neighboring divisions, namely Kopsiro and Cheptais, have successfully attained sub-county status, leaving Kaptama as the sole exception.

He argued that this disparity has hindered the equitable distribution of services and development initiatives in the area.

According to Kosum, leaders within Kaptama Division have reached a consensus to advocate for the establishment of additional sub-locations, aiming for a total of 19, and locations, totaling 9.

This move, they believe, will bring essential services closer to the people and address the long-standing neglect of the region.

Advocating for a fair distribution of resources, Kosum proposed that Mount Elgon constituency should have a minimum of four sub-counties, specifically Kaptama, Kapsokwony, Kopsiro, and Cheptais.

He stressed the importance of equal representation and development opportunities for all divisions within the constituency.

In addition to the call for more sub-counties, leaders have expressed their dissatisfaction with the perceived neglect of Mount Elgon in terms of overall development.

Kosum urged the Interior Cabinet Secretary to attentively consider their plea, emphasizing that it is high time the region received the attention it deserves.

Taking their demands, a step further, the leaders are seeking the subdivision of Mount Elgon into two constituencies, a move they believe will ensure more effective representation and responsiveness to the unique needs of the people in the region.

They plan to engage the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to pursue this proposal.
