United Democratic Alliance party leader and presidential aspirant, should move with speed to contain the cracks that are now emerging in his coalition.

With less than 50 days to the general election, Ruto’s bid depends on the unity of Mount Kenya region. On 15th June, 2022 the coalition witnessed a public spat between its top allies. Kimani Wamatangi and William Kabogo who are both eyeing the Kiambu gubernatorial seat, squared it all in public in presence of the party’s deputy president contestant.

Moses Kuria on his part has criticized the coalition for bringing together MCAs and MPs to attack him, in a move aimed at discrediting him. Moses Kuria in what was seen as a direct response to UDA, went ahead to meet William Kabogo where he posted a photo of him and Kabogo captioned “Kiambu is in safe hands”

“I will not apportion blame to any of the two gentlemen, but I can relate to governor Kabogo’s pain. For three days, the UDA leadership has been meeting UDA MP and MCA candidates to plot how to embarrass Kabogo and me during the tour.” Moses Kuria said while referring to an incident that happened between Kabogo and Wamatangi.

Justin Muturi who is one of the coalition partner dismissed the cracks created by Mt Kenya leaders in the coalition. While speaking in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County during the county’s bottom-up economic forum, muturi said that no one was forced to join the coalition.

“Every player in the party teamed up with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) out of their own volition. This is because their policies and that of the party were in close resemblance and no one was pressured to join,” Muturi said on Tuesday, June 21.

Deputy President William Ruto has an uphill task of trying to maintain peace within the coalition, while at the same trying to support UDA’s gubernatorial candidate in Kiambu. The county has five gubernatorial candidates with three of them from Kenya Kwanza coalition.

These cracks come days after the polls showed that Azimio La Umoja’s presidential candidate Raila Odinga is gaining ground in Mount Kenya. The main impact being that Raila chose Martha Karua as his running mate while Ruto decided to go with Rigathi, a debate that has brought the gender card into question.
