As the 2022 general elections closely approach, there is a political realignment being witnessed in the country.

It’s evident enough that ethnicity still dictates the direction of voting in Kenya. Registrar of political parties has registered over 100 parties with regional roots.

Efforts by President Uhuru Kenyatta to unite the nation are now becoming a dream, his own backyard is not ready to back another candidate outside the region. In fact, the central region has become a battleground for top presidential contenders.

The main cause of post-election violence witnessed in the nation was due to tribal political dissatisfaction. Additionally, it was later intensified by candidates who felt that their votes got stolen by opponents from the winning party.

Regional representation

Kenyan political parties are tribal in nature. ANC and Ford Kenya represent Luhya, ODM represent Nyanza and the coastal people, Jubilee represented Mount Kenya and Rift Valley people, Wiper party is for Ukambani people. This is enough evidence to explain ethnicity in the nation.

It’s difficult for a leader to win votes far away from the home ground and even impossible to be voted with another political party.

Governors, Members of Parliament, Members of County Assembly, and even Women Representatives are only elected by their own people through their own recognized political Parties.

Mwingi North Member of Parliament was broadcasted saying that “When President Kenyatta came to Ukambani to inspect the government projects we were Surprised to see Mr. Ondinga with him. As Ukambani leaders we wanted to have a talk with Mr. Kenyatta, unless Mr. Ondinga you are invited by Kalonzo you should keep off Ukambani. It’s like you have come to demean our leader.”

The same trend was also witnessed with Mount Kenya leaders. Moses Kuria, Martha Karua, and Kiunjuri addressed the public saying in three months’ time they would meet to come up with resolutions on how to conduct the region’s affairs.

Moses Kuria added that “we want one party that would advance the region’s agenda.”

As if that was not enough Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, was quoted by NTV saying that they are not used to being in opposition and Mount Kenya people will not join the opposition.

She also urged North Eastern leaders not to join the opposition come 2022.

Mount Kenya has tried its best and even coroneted their political kingpin. GEMA association made speaker Justin Muturi their kingpin under tight security.

Disappointed by this coronation, Murang’a governor backed by Kirinyaga and Nyeri governors termed such practice as illegal.
