In May 2015, five students from St Georges Girls’ Secondary School were expelled on suspicion of engaging in lesbianism. The accused sued the school for victimization and discrimination.
The parents of the 17-year-olds demanded immediate readmission saying that the students have the right to basic education.
A disciplinary report seen by Kenya Regional News stated that the girls were caught red-handed, the report termed it a major offense.
“Your daughter named above has been suspended from school for gross misconduct. You are required to appear before the school committee on April 24 because your daughter should not be excluded from the institution,” a letter signed by Principal Rukunga read in part.
Another similar case involved Sing’ore a girl’s boarding school located in Kamoi location, Keiyo North constituency in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The school has been a topic of discussion on social media. It’s reported that the school suspended 20 Students for engaging in immorality. The school says that the students have been practicing lesbianism in school.
Their suspension stirred a heated debate on social media and even among some parents whose daughters were victims.
A parent appearing before the disciplinary committee threatened to sue the school saying that her daughter was not given a fair hearing.
“I asked for evidence but the disciplinary panel could not produce it. I am engaging my lawyer because I know the discipline panel didn’t give my daughter a fair hearing,” she said.
The issue has raised concern among education stakeholders. Parents associations now want the ministry to find ways on how to handle such cases.
One parent stated that students need counseling and proper guidance instead of suspending them from the school.
“Suspension is not good for the development of the child, what they need is proper counseling and guidance,” He said.
