Uhuru Comments on Offshore Accounts after Pandora Papers Leak.

Pandora Papers Leak-President Uhuru has defended the Kenyatta family after being linked with the leaked Pandora Papers while chairing the UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, October 12, 2021.

The President said that his name was not mentioned in the list after journalists unrelentingly asked Uhuru to comment on the tax haven report released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

“As I said before, my name first and foremost is not there,” He said.

He further noted that the report didn’t link the Kenyatta family to any wrongdoings in the report.

“There has been no mention of any wrongdoing on my part,” he added. 

The president promised to give a comprehensive report once he returns from the Americas. Through a press release shared with the media, he stated that the report will go a long way in enhancing transparency.

“These reports will go a long way in enhancing the financial transparency and openness that we require in Kenya and around the globe. The movement of illicit funds, proceeds of crime, and graft thrive in an environment of secrecy and darkness,” stated the President.

OleKina defends the president after Pandora Papers Leak

Narok senator Ledama Olekina came to the defense of the President saying that there’s nothing wrong in having offshore accounts and assets.

“If I were the President and it was my own money I was investing abroad, I would ask whether that is the best thing to do, but if I am a beneficiary, that is a different case. The truth is that if we could invest abroad, we would do it,” he said.

ODM leader Raila Odinga also defended the president saying that there’s nothing wrong with having offshore wealth so long as one can explain the source of the wealth.

Sudi criticized Uhuru’s family after Pandora Papers Leak

However, the president’s sentiments were met with critics from Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi who stated that Kenyans were suffering while the family was accumulating wealth.

“Many Kenyans are suffering, parents crying school fees, youths crying Tala, Branch, Fuliza, M-shwari, etc while one family is accumulating unaccounted billions in offshore accounts. Mungu saidia Kenya (God help Kenya),” he posted on his official Facebook page.
